carbohydrate heaven

Oh, friends. Waist-deep in The Whole30, it’s only a little painful to look through this post. Before starting my squeaky-clean eating program, Jay and I had one last hurrah: a family dinner with his housemates. J & A, our now-former roomies, had given us a certificate to their favorite SF restaurant as a parting gift. How well they know us!

All but one of us had been to flour + water previously, so we knew to expect absolutely fantastic Italian food. This round was no exception. Everything was so gloriously tasty. There’s not much to say that these photos can’t convey.

Margherita pizza with San Marzano tomatoes, basil, fior di  & extra virgin olive oil.

Salsiccia pizza with pork sausage, taggiasca olive, broccoli di diccio, chili & pecorino.

Click through for more mouth-watering pictures, and don’t forget to send some sympathy my way. My cravings for carbs have died off considerably, but there’ll always be a place in my heart for pizza…

Pappardelle with braised pork, cabbage and mustard.

Pork trotter fattisu with brown butter, capers & cauliflower.

Hen raviolini with scarlet turnips & nettles.

Whole wheat rigatoni with boar sugo, spigarello, chili & breadcrumbs.

Tagliatelle with braised beef cheek, parsnip & horseradish.

Not only was the meal delicious, but the service was friendly and the ambiance cozy. The only caveat is that flour + water is crazy popular, so reservations can be difficult to snag; walking in can also lead to ridiculously long waits. Initially we’d booked a table minutes before closing through OpenTable, but after speaking to a reservationist, I was able to bump us to a much more reasonable hour. I recommend picking up your phone for the best results — it’s worth the call.
